Starting tomorrow we will have weekly HERO winners on the morning announcements every Thursday.
The purpose of the HERO drawings is to recognize students who demonstrate the qualities of a HERO (Honesty, Empathy, Respectfulness, and Open-mindedness) on a daily basis. When they see these qualities demonstrated, teachers submit student names to the drawing. The selected students will win THIS new HERO t-shirt that was designed by 8th graders Carly Robbins and Gloria Xu (HOLD UP BLUE T-SHIRT).
We will also continue have our big end of the month drawing on the last Friday of the month. Those students will win 5 Below or Game Stop gift cards. Listen to the announcements because your name might be called!

What does the magazine drive and Pennies for Patients have in common? Dr. Ricker's class won $100 from the Magazine Drive's Pig Race and donated all of it to Pennies for Patients! Wow!!

When someone has a blood cancer they have to go through treatment for a long time. Sometimes as long as 3 years. Today is day 3 of our Pennies for Patients fund-raiser. The homeroom in each grade that donates the most money over 3 weeks will earn a pizza party. Together we're making a difference in the fight for a cure. Is there a pizza party in your future?

For those who know what Pennies for Patients is, it will be January 9-27 this year. Your boxes will be delivered between now and January 6th.

For those who don't know, here's the low-down:
P for P is a fundraiser the Builder's Club has each year for the Leukemia/Lymphoma Society
Each homeroom gets a collection box. You may decorate it, if you choose.
The homeroom in each grade that donates the most money will earn a pizza party. That's one pizza party per grade. I supply the pizza, you will supply the drinks and supervision (more on that later in January)
Please send your box to room 811 on any day you want the box counted. Some people send it every day, and that's fine. We count your money and send back an empty box.
In three weeks we raise an average of $5000 (we raised $8500 in 2010). Checks are accepted (tax deductable) made out to LLS. I personally love this - easy to count!
We also accept large bills, small bills, and all forms of American currency - not just pennies as the name suggests.
We will announce 3 times a week which homerooms are in the lead.
You really don't have any work to do - just "talk up" the fundraiser and send your box down to get counted.

On Saturday the Valley Forge Wrestling Team opened their season at the Chi Chester Tournament earning 3rd place as a team. In the varsity lineup the Eagles sent a remarkable 12 of their 16 wrestlers to the championship bouts for 1st & 3rd place.

Overall a great showing by the Eagles, please come out and support the team Thursday as we open our dual meet season at home vs. Bala Cynwyd.

A huge thank you to all the staff, students and families of Valley Forge Middle School………….
With the money raised from the sale of the Think Pink t-shirts and proceeds from the Student council dance and our Staff dress down Friday, we raised $1400 to donate to a local charity.

The money has been given to Cuddle My Kids, a nonprofit organization which provides mothers with dedicated volunteers who bring happiness into their home during a very sad time. Mothers battling breast cancer often struggle to balance their recovery with caring and nurturing of their young children at home. Through organized activities like crafts, journals, reading and music, Cuddle My Kids’ volunteers entertain and enable young children to express their emotions in a positive way. At the same time, mom can relax, observe, or join in the fun.

We are pleased to support such an organization and thank everyone for their support of such a cause.
Well done Valley Forge!

Tie-dye day has arrived! Are you wearing tie-die and peace signs? Are you saying peace out to drugs and alcohol? Most kids are. According to a recent survey, drug use rates have decreased since 2001. Kids are rejecting LSD, marijuana, steroids, alcohol and tobacco. Kids are telling researchers that they know more about drugs and that is why they are able to say no! Will you step up and say peace out to drugs?

Hey Valley Forge Middle School! Did you remember your hat today!? Let’s show our pledge to be Drug Free and wear our hats all day to show we will PUT A CAP ON DRUGS!! That’s right this week is Red Ribbon Week and we will be having Spirit Days all week to show our support for keeping Valley Forge drug free!

Red Ribbon Week is the oldest and largest drug prevention campaign in the country.
Its goal is to encourage Americans and especially YOU to live drug free lives.

Red Ribbon Week began when DEA Special Agent Enrique "Kiki" Camarena, died at the hands of drug traffickers in Mexico while fighting the battle against illegal drugs to keep our country and YOU safe.

Camarena worked his way through college, served in the Marines and became a police officer. When he decided to join the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, his mother tried to talk him out of it. "I can't not do this," he told her. "I'm only one person, but I want to make a difference."

Can YOU make a difference?
Can YOU pledge to be drug free?

The 8th grade boys soccer team lost a hard fought game to Radnor yesterday, 3-1.

The Valley Forge 115 pound football team extended their unbeaten streak to 3 games with a 28-8 victory over Radnor yesterday. The defense set the tone from the start shutting down the Red Raiders repeatedly. Our Eagles scored the very 1st play on a 60 yard touchdown run!

On Wednesday, the 8th grade girls volleyball team won their game against Stewart. The eagles pushed through 5 games with a win the match 3-2.
The 8th grade boys soccer beat Stewart on Thursday 4-1. The Eagles fell behind early but rallies to score four unanswered goals to take control of the game.
The 8th grade girls soccer team played a well fought match against Lower Merion yesterday. In the first half, Lower Merion took the lead scoring 2 goals, but in the second half, Valley Forge fought right back and tied it up.

The 8th grade field hockey team won their game against Paxon Hollow, 5-1.

The Valley Forge Middle School team upped is record to 2 and 0 yesterday with a 26-20 win over Upper Merion. Upper Merion controlled the clock with a 60 yard opening drive, putting the Eagles behind for the 1st time this season. Valley forge responded with a 50 yard scoring pass. Upper Merion came right back with a long drive of their own again scoring with no time left in the half and evening the score at 14 each. Excellent play was turned in by all, Great job Eagles your coaches could not be any prouder of you!

The 8th grade boys soccer team tied Upper Merion yesterday, 1-1. The Eagles played an outstanding game on defense and continuously stopped all attacks on goal.

The VFMS CARE Team is holding a door decorating contest for Red Ribbon Week. Red Ribbon Week is from Oct. 24th-28 and is the oldest and largest drug prevention campaign in the country. Its goal is to encourage Americans and especially YOU to live drug free lives.

Today is the day to begin decorating your door! The doors will be judged during Homebase on Oct. 28th. Each grade is judged individually and the winning homebases will receive a special treat!

What to do to decorate your door:

1. Choose a slogan that promotes a drug free community.

2. Decorate your classroom door based on your Slogan. (Simple is always better!!)

3. Decorate the OUTSIDE of the door.

As many of you may know, October is breast cancer awareness month.
Throughout the community you will see various signs of organizations bringing awareness. From Light the Nights whereby Philadelphia structures are lit up in the color pink to the Susan G. Komen organization and its efforts to fight the cause through organized walks/run or other activities.

The simple pink ribbon reminds is not just the symbol of awareness. It represents the life of a woman – our mothers, sisters, daughters, and friends. The pink ribbon represents the value and dignity women bring to our lives every day and the devastation felt when one is lost to breast cancer.

From October 24 – 28th VFMS will be participating in RED RIBBON WEEK.
Red Ribbon Week is the oldest and largest drug prevention campaign in the country.
Its goal is to encourage Americans and especially YOU to live drug free lives.

Beginning on Tuesday, you can show you support living a drug free life by decorating your homebase door. The homebase with the most creative door will win a special treat from the CARE team. Judging will take place on Oct. 28th. Be sure to talk to your homebase teacher about ideas and when you can work on your door. Good luck everyone!

Red Ribbon Week began when DEA Special Agent Enrique "Kiki" Camarena, died at the hands of drug traffickers in Mexico while fighting the battle against illegal drugs to keep our country and YOU safe.

Camarena worked his way through college, served in the Marines and became a police officer. When he decided to join the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, his mother tried to talk him out it. "I can't not do this," he told her. "I'm only one person, but I want to make a difference."

The Valley Forge Middle School 115 pound football team opened their season at home yesterday with a very convincing 34-0 shutout of Welsh Valley.

The 8th grade boys soccer team lost a hard fought game to Welsh valley yesterday, 5-2. The Eagles fell behind in the first half, but rallied to score two goals in the second half and make the game close. The offense kept pressure on the goal, but they could not connect on their shots.

Sports---
The 7th Grade girls soccer team opened up their season Monday against T/E Middle School. The team lost 4-1; however a strong effort by all players.

8th grade field hockey played a hard fought scrimage yesterday against T/E middle school. In the one half that was played (due to rain) the Eagles managed to get a score of 1-0.

The 8th grade boys soccer team got off to a great start yesterday by beating T/E 5-1.

Yesterday the eighth grade girls volleyball team had their first win against TE. At the beginning of the match they were down, but came back to take the win 2-1.

Last night the 7th grade volleyball team won a great game against T/E.
There were great returns and amazing serving.

Interested in doing something for the community? The Builder’s Club is your club!! We will have our first informal meeting on Tuesday morning next week. It won't be a long meeting. Some of our past community services have included:

Stop Hunger Now project
Highway clean-ups
Knitting for local charities
Donating 35 dinners to local families
Pennies for Patients campaign
And of course…. Our monthly bake sales.

7th grader J C visited the Ronald McDonald House in Philadelphia this summer. The Ronald McDonald House provides a temporary housing near the hospital for the parents while their child is being treated for cancer.

How would you like an opportunity to earn some great prizes? How would you like a chance to spin a wheel that may earn you some cash? You are in luck. The Magazine Drive begins today! The kick off assemblies will be held this morning in the auditorium. 7th and 8th graders will be taken to their assembly by their homebase teachers immediately following announcements. 5th and 6th graders will be taken to their assembly by their second period teachers. Just a reminder that magazines cannot be sold to school staff members. Be safe and have fun!

Students in Grade 5 and grade 6 Chorus must sign up for activity sectionals either Tuesday or Wednesday.

Sign up sheets are on the bulletin board outside Room 112. Chorus is a small sectional reheasal and the large after school rehearsal.

Grade 7 and 8 Chorus- sectionals for Tenors and Baritone today.
